Hi.
We have a small bathroom. I already posted a question abt possible color for it now I would like to know how to clean the walls. They are dirty. Do I just use soap %26amp; water or can I use Pinesol or **** %26amp; Span? They obviously need to be cleaned BEFORE paint is put on.Cleaning walls in the bathroom for paint?
I would try bleach and water mixture and after that dries I would sand the walls and then prime them with a good primmer made for bathroom and finally a good bathroom paint. they also make an additive for paint for anti moldCleaning walls in the bathroom for paint?
In a bathroom you most likely have a sheen to the walls. You need to knock that sheen down and the dirt so the new paint will adhere. You want to scuff with fine sandpaper, then use a liquid deglosser (use according to directions),they have the type you do not need to rinse. If really grungy use tsp then scuff and wipe down again with a rinsed rag . Then paint as usual.
TSP Its the best pre-paint cleaner degreaser made it was so good they took some of the chemicals out of it but it still works just not as well. You can buy it in many ways powder ,concentrated solution ,ready to use.I like the powder as its the cheapest and I can make it stronger if I see fit. Local paint or hardware store will carry it.Tri Sodium Phosphate
Any of the cleaners that you mentioned will do the job. BUT, you must remember to rinse the walls thoroughly. Rinse with clear water at least two times. And walls must be thoroughly dry and free from soap film before applying paint. You might want to lighty sand paper the dry walls before applying paint. Not really necessary. But it's just a good idea. All the pro interior painters do it. Good Luck.
They make a special powder for just that purpose and I can't think of the name. You get it at the hardware store, it comes in a box and is a yellow powder. It doesn't suds and is for washing walls.
'onandonandon' is right. It's called TSP (Trisodium phosphate)
You may also want to use a solution of diluted bleach in water to kill any remaining mold/mildew.
